Small Business Spotlight: Black Rock Ranch
Todd Sullivan is the owner of Black Rock Ranch. A retired teacher and longtime resident of the foothills east of Clovis. Several years ago, he and his family decided to buy a piece of land large enough to begin a small cattle operation.
Briefly tell us about yourself and your business.
Several years ago, our family bought a piece of land large enough for a small cattle operation. We built a house, two barns, nine stall enclosures, a round pen, a large arena, and over a thousand yards to new fencing. We would like to create a small business raising cow/calf pairs here on our property. Our business will also, hopefully, include boarding revenue from outside horses. We now have a safe and enjoyable setting where horse enthusiasts could enjoy arena time and trail riding. Their horses would like our large pipe stalls and expansive turn out pastures.
In what ways has Fresno State Small Business University assisted your business?
Jorg Letkemann began helping me negotiate the confusing and frustrating process of communicating with various government entities to apply for a business license. Our efforts have been especially difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic but Jorg continues to be persistent. I have appreciated his patience, his researched advice, and his unfailing promptness returning emails and texts.
What do you believe makes your small business stand out or unique?
Our business could be unique because of our location. We are surrounded by open space, natural foothill scenery, and largely quiet days. We believe we can offer visitors a boarding experience that’s much more than just a place to leave your horse.
How do you plan on growing your small business?
We may in the future grow our business by offering daycare for dogs, or at least dog kennel space where people could bring their dogs when they go on vacation.
What is your favorite thing about being a small business owner?
My favorite thing about being about operating a business like this on our own property is that I would be doing the same things I do every day, even without a business. It is what I have always enjoyed. Retirement has allowed me the time to build better facilities. I am hoping the cattle help pay for some of the fencings, and that visitors like what they see here.
