OCED joined Fresno Unified School District and the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission earlier this month to announce a new policy for procurement of fresh, local food for school meals. The three organizations joined forces this year to develop and implement the new policy, which aims to increase purchase of local foods incrementally by 3 to 5 percent each year.
Fresno Unified's Food Services Department's Farm to School Procurement Policy is part of an initiative known as Fresh Grub, operated by Fresno EOC. Fresh Grub is a farm to school project which promotes healthy eating habits, provides access to fresh, local foods and facilitates nutrition education for Fresno Unified students. Further, it connects local food and farm products to school cafeterias, providing access to new markets for local businesses.
Local growers and manufacturers who are interested in becoming involved are encouraged to contact Jensen Vang, Fresno EOC Food Systems Development Director at or 559-263-1583.
