CITI Animal Research Training

Fresno State uses Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program to provide
foundational training in animal research.

How to Complete the CITI Animal Research Training

  1. Visit the CITI program website: https://about.citiprogram.org/en/homepage/
  2. Login or register for a new account. (Be sure to select California State University, Fresno as your institution during the registration process).
  3. During registration, add the Laboratory Animal Research course to your queue.
    • Investigators conducting research that use lab animals should choose the
      module for “Working with the IACUC.”
    • IACUC Members should choose the module “Essentials for IACUC Members.”
    • Individuals conducting studies that have the potential to cause “more than
      momentary pain and distress” in Mice or Rats should complete the module on
      “Minimizing Pain and Distress.”
    • Additionally, please choose the appropriate species specific electives depending
      on your work or interests.
  4. Once registration is completed, it should take you to the “Main Menu/My Courses”
    dashboard where you can access your course.
  5. Complete the course. CITI will issue a completion report once you finish the required
    course.

Who is required to complete CITI Animal Research Training?

All persons directly involved in animal subjects research must complete animal research
training on the CITI Program website. IACUC approval of any application is contingent upon
the completion of this mandatory online training.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes, CITI will issue a Completion Certificate/Report once you finish the mandatory course.

Will I need to renew my certificate?

CITI Animal Research Training is valid for three years. All persons conducting research with
animals must renew certification every three years by taking the CITI refresher course.

How long does it take to complete the required course?

Most learners complete the training in 2-4 hours. You can stop and begin anytime. Save your
work before you exit, and remember your user name and password.
