Members Present: A. Lawson (Chair), D. Nef, J. Charalambides,
S. Lewis.
Members Absent: B. Benedict (excused), M. Miller (excused).
Visitors: M. Valencia.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Lawson at 11:08 a.m. in
University Center, room #203.

  1. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 9/7/2007.
  2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
  3. Communications and Announcements.
    Memo from Child Family Consumer Sciences regarding counting
    Liberal Studies General Education (GE) Package for the pre-credential option was announced and will be on agenda for next
    meeting.
  4. Interdisciplinary Art Studies (IAS) 108.
    · The GE program description states “at least half of the
    minimum writing requirement consists of sustained multi-paragraph assignments”. The committee feels that four 500
    word papers do not meet this requirement and suggests the
    syllabus be revised to reflect this requirement.
    · The committee also suggests that a reading list or bibliography
    may be useful for the student, but is not required.
    MSC to approve with recommended changes.
  5. English 44.
    · An iterative component to the writing assignment must be
    reflected in syllabus.
    · The University Honor Code should be included or referenced
    under University Policy.
    · GE Learning Outcomes should reflect outcomes language: eg.
    “develop an awareness and understanding” to be replaced with
    outcomes verbs.
    MSC to approve with recommended changes.
  6. Learning Outcomes Sessions.
    Each member gave a brief summary of the learning outcomes
    sessions which they facilitated. Some sessions were quite
    successful with new goals and outcomes articulated, while other
    sessions were less productive with faculty generally suspicious of
    outcomes assessment activities.
  7. Program Review.
    The program review document is due at the end of the month and
    members will all participate in further development of the review
    document. The GE committee will meet two more time in October
    focusing only on program review.

MSC to adjourn 1:45 p.m.

The next scheduled meeting of the General Education Committee will
be Friday, Oct 12 , 2007, at 11:00 a.m., in the University Center # 203.
