Members Present: B. Tsukimura (Chair), J. Farrar, K. Forbes, D. Harris, J. Olson–Buchanan, P. Popma, J. Redd–Williams.

Members Absent: None.

Visitors: J. Echeverria, M. Caldwell, D. Nef, M. Botwin, T. Leimer, B. Fasse.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Tsukimura at 9:15 a.m. in the University Center, Room #203.

  1. Minutes. MSC to amend the Minutes of 9/6/2007 as follows:
    #3e Change Student Evaluations to Teaching Evaluations.
  2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
  3. Communications and Announcements.
    1. Investigate hiring research fellows “after hours”. What policy governs this?
    2. Elections are to be held in all departments by September 28, 2007 for members to the Faculty Hearing Panel.
    3. Refer issue of email requests for student athlete progress to J. Redd–Williams. Should these email requests be honored? Or, should the request come in writing?
    4. Survey for faculty was put on the Sloan Foundation website. Faculty members are encouraged to respond to the survey. We need a 40% response rate.
    5. J. Redd–Williams has not heard back from many departments regarding elections to the Faculty Hearing Panel.
    6. Sabbaticals – Two semesters at half time must be granted. One semester – grant 12%. The Academic Policy Manual (APM) does not comply with Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Personnel
      Committee will look at the policy this year.
  4. Policy on the Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM 322).
    Discussed proposed revision (draft) of APM 322.
  5. Time Certain, 10:30 a.m. – Provost’s advisors on Processing Student Rating Forms.
    Those involved in Student Ratings joined the Personnel Committee meeting at 10:30 a.m.
    1. RFP drafted for a consultant on student ratings project.
    2. Faculty members have the lead on setting policy for teaching effectiveness.
    3. Use student ratings for continuous improvement of faculty and improvement of student learning software.
    4. Discussed various issues involved with student ratings and peer review.

MSC to adjourn (11:20 a.m.)

The next scheduled meeting of the Personnel Committee will be Thursday, September 27, 2007 in UC #203. An agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting. The entire committee membership may be reached at the e-mail alias “perscom”.
