Members Present: A. Lawson (Chair), B. Berrett D. Christensen,
S. Lewis, K. Miller, D. Nef, A. Yamane.

Members Absent: D. Henriques (excused),
S Adisasmito-Smith (excused).

The meeting was called to order by Chair Lawson at 11:07 a.m. in
University Center, room #203.

  1. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 10/03/08.
  2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda.
  3. Communications and Announcements.
    • Welcome and introductions of new members Akiko Yamane and
      Bryan Berrett.
    • Memo regarding elimination of A3 coordinating subcommittee
      was sent to the Executive Committee Chair, Michael Botwin.
    • D. Nef has organized a group to discuss creation of a new first
      year experience.
    • IC syllabi revisions are now being submitted. The committee will
      review as they come in.
    • Program review response was sent to D. Nef’s office.
    • D. Nef’s response to program review was distributed to
      committee members.
  4. Area ID Syllabi Review.
    Area ID syllabi were assigned to committee members and reviews
    will be discussed at the next meeting.
  5. Communication Plan: (Improving Communication)
    • A discussion of ways to improve communication regarding General Education (GE) policies and the value of GE included:
      1. Video clips regarding GE vision.
      2. Meetings with area faculty.
      3. Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL)
        workshops –on things like iterative writing etc.
      4. Require faculty teaching in GE to attend GE orientation
        workshop (in days before semester begins).
      5. Require a course coordinator if there are more than two
        faculty teaching a course.
      6. Establishment of a GE listserve.
      7. Communicating through senate (via memos).
    • Student nominated GE educator of the year (reviewed by GE
      committee) to raise visibility of GE.

MSC to adjourn at 12:15 p.m.

The next scheduled meeting of the General Education Committee will be
October 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the University Center #203.
