Members Present: T. Skeen (Chair), S. Brown-Welty, K. Carey (Dean), P. English, G. Kriehn, N.P. Mahalik, S. Skelton, Z. Wang, R. Yazdipour.

Members Absent: None.

The meeting was called to order by Chair Skeen at 2:03 p.m. In the University Center Room #203.

  1. Minutes: MSC to approve the Minutes of October 7, 2008.
  2. Agenda: MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
  3. Communications and Announcements:
    Dean Carey requested committee members from each college to forward her the email addresses of the selected student board members.
    Visitors from Communicative Disorders will be present October 21st. 2008 at 2:05 p.m. Special Education to be announced.
  4. Discussion of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies (Health & Human Services).
    A question and discussion session was called. The committee felt that the program review report contained mixed information of both undergraduate and graduate programs, and more on the former rather than the latter. There were questions on the graduation rates (around 38%), recruitment plan and the publication numbers, etc. Committee member Dr. Steven Skelton from the same department helped clarify many of the questions. The department still faces a national shortage of PhD candidates for faculty positions. The department is enthusiastic for a Doctoral program in Audiology.
  5. Graduate Student Symposium (GSS).
    Dean Carey learned from the Dean’s meeting that the university is still facing budget reduction should the governor decide to ask the money back at any time. However, planning should continue for GSS. The tentative date for GSS is May 7, 2009. April 21-22, 2009 are national Graduate Student Recognition days and will also be considered.
    Suggestions were made to seek local business sponsors, and invite keynote speakers at GSS.

The next scheduled meeting of the Graduate Committee is Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the University Center, Room #203.
