Members Present: C. Edmondson (Chair), A. Fiala, K. Fugelsang, D. Lewis, F. Padilla.

Members Absent: D. Helsel (excused).

The meeting was called to order by Chair Edmondson at 10:02 a.m. in the University Center Room #203.

  1. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 9/17/2008.
  2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
  3. Communication and Announcements.
    1. A. Fiala announced the Ethics Center Lecture for October 29, 2008. This will be focused on cheating and plagiarism and will feature members of the university honor code committee, Joyce Ester and Jim Prince. The Ethics Center Lecture will be held October 29 at 12 noon in Alice Peters Auditorium.
    2. Chair Edmonson announced the following:
      1. This committee needs members from Business and Engineering.
      2. Still looking for a volunteer liaison from the Student Affairs committee for the FACEL committee.
      3. Report from Facilities and Campus Environment Liaison Committee (FACEL).
        • Library tour showed progress in the library.
        • Agricultural Science is working on odor control.
        • The year of the move website can keep people updated about various closures and relocations.
      4. Disability/Accessibility Fair is going on October 15, 2008.
      5. National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) Welcoming Diversity workshops will occur on October 25, 2008 and November 8, 2008.
  4. (APM 231) - Revised Policy on Adding and Dropping Courses.
    MSC to approve Chair Edmondson’s memo discussing (APM 231) Policy on Adding and Dropping Courses.
    1. Chair Edmondson will look into copying this memo to interested parties such as Linda Gannaway.
    2. Chair Edmondson may ask for the committee’s support in disseminating the memo to the Senate and Senate committees.
  5. (APM 235) Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism - Discussion.
    1. Questions were raised about what we are supposed to be looking for and why we are being asked to review this document.
      • A. Fiala will contact D. Nef to clarify.
    2. Questions were raised about repercussions for faculty (especially untenured faculty) who pursue cheating and plagiarism cases against students—especially if pursuing these cases is perceived as having an adverse affect on teaching evaluations.
    3. The Honor Code Committee survey was briefly discussed and a question arose: Do the faculty feel supported when they report cheating and plagiarism?
    4. Questions were raised about the need for student involvement in honor code violations.

MSC to adjourn at 10:50 a.m.

The next scheduled meeting of the Student Affairs will be on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the University Center #208. An agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting.
