A meeting of the Academic Senate was called to order by Chair Botwin at 4:07 p.m. in the University Center, Room 200.

1. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 3/22/10.

2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.

3. Communications and Announcements.

   1. Chair Botwin made an announced he was making a presentation on the faculty role in shared governance to the UFO (Untenured Faculty Organization) at noon on April 13, 2010 in HML Studio 2. Dr. Botwin also announced that he would not be seeking an additional term as Chair of the Academic Senate. He reminded Senators about the nominating process for the positions of Chair and Vice Chair. He also encouraged the senators to seek leadership positions in the Academic Senate.

   2. Andrew Jones (Sociology) made an announcement about Earth Day and sustainability.

   3. Harald Schweizer (Criminology) made an announcement about a presentation taking place in his department.

4. New Business - There was no new business.

5. Policy On Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM 322) – Personnel Committee – Second Reading - Continued.

   MSF an amendment proposing the deletion of the terms validity and reliability from the policy was defeated.

   MS The Senate discussed the potential for the selection of questions from a campus-wide item pool v. the use of a campus-wide instrument with a core set of common questions for students to use in the evaluation of an instructor’s teaching effectiveness. Several friendly amendments were adopted. A friendly amendment replacing several sentences of the document with new language was offered, but found objectionable by a member of the senate. The amendment was formalized and moved and seconded. A discussion on that amendment ended due a lack of a quorum of senators.

MSC to adjourn at 5:30 p.m.

The next scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate will be announced. An Agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting.
