A meeting of the Academic Senate was called to order by Chair Caldwell at 4:06 p.m. in the University Center, Room 200.

  1. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.

  2. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 5/3/10.

  3. Communications and Announcements.

    1. Provost Covino, shared the following:

      Several cohort and non-cohort category faculty searches have been requested for 2010-2011. Provost Covino is currently seeking search priorities and clarifications from the deans.

      An update and overview of the IT reorganization was given.

    2. Statewide Senator Otto Benavides reported recent plenary session resolutions and election results from the Statewide Academic Senate.

    3. Associate Provost Ellen Junn thanked the faculty for their work during this difficult year and offered special appreciation to faculty involved in new initiatives across campus. Calls for future opportunities for faculty engagement will be sent shortly.

    4. Statewide Senator Jacinta Amaral announced the importance of remaining informed about the discussion surrounding reengineering the CSU curriculum.

    5. Academic Senate Chair Michael Caldwell thanked Provost Covino for the refreshments. He thanked the dedicated staff of the Academic Senate — Elise Rodriguez (now in the Provost’s Office) and Sharon Hayes, Dr. John Cagle (Senate Parliamentarian), and Jessica Sweeten (student representative and ASI President) for their work and dedication to the Academic Senate.

  4. New Business – There was no new business.

  5. Policy On Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM 322) – Personnel Committee – Second Reading – Continued.

    MSC to accept an amendment to change the proposed APM 322 Section II.B to read as follows:

    “Student rating questionnaires shall provide for the assessment of the applicable components identified in Section I. The student rating questionnaires shall be unsigned. Departments shall select questions having demonstrated reliability and validity from a campus—wide pool approved by the Academic Senate and Provost.”

    MSC to accept Senator Jacinta Amaral’s (Statewide) amendment to add the following sentences to the end of Section II.A of the proposed APM 322.

    “Each department may adopt a protocol for face-to—face real time peer observations of teaching where applicable. The results of these peer evaluations may be used both formatively and summatively.”

    MSF to accept Senator Melanie Ram’s (Political Science) amendment to change the proposed APM 322 Section II.C to read as “Recognizing that student ratings may not be an accurate reflection of faculty teaching effectiveness, the data from peer evaluations and student ratings shall be used as a small part of the overall evaluation of faculty for decisions relating to retention, tenure, and promotion.” Motion failed.

MSC to adjourn at 5:50 p.m.

The next scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate will be announced.
