A meeting of the Academic Senate was called to order by Chair Caldwell
at 4:06 p.m. in the Library Auditorium, Room 2206.
1. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
2. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 5/10/10.
3. Communications and Announcements.
A. Provost Covino reported the University still does not have a
budget, the limits of the University’s funding has been met,
the Graduation Rate Initiative begun last year is proving
successful, and searches for faculty positions are
proceeding.
B. Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Karen Carey, as
introduced by Senator Otto Benavides, announced the
upcoming Technology Petting Zoo and the Tour of Athletics
Facilities.
C. Chair Caldwell thanked Dr. Corey Whitehead for providing
musical prelude to the meeting.
D. Chair Caldwell announced the Academic Senate will take a
group photo during the September 27th meeting.
4. New Business.
Senator J. Slagter (Women’s Studies) inquired about the toxic
waste facility on the University’s campus. The item will return to
the Academic Senate as a communication and announcement.
5. Policy On Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM 322) –
Personnel Committee – Second Reading – Continued.
MSC to accept an amendment to change the second paragraph of
the Introduction by replacing the last sentence and adding the
following:
“Standards for each component shall be established by
academic departments. Standards should be based on the
principle that the primary purpose of teaching assessment is
to provide meaningful feedback to instructors. Assessment
for administrative personnel purposes is a secondary goal.
Moreover, statistical data must be analyzed with the
realization that serious limitations exist relative to the
accumulation and analysis of such data. Also, students
cannot effectively evaluate all aspects of teaching, especially
course content, so departments should use multiple
methods of assessment. It is recommended that quantitative
student ratings count for between 30 and 50 percent of the
assessment of any instructor.”
MSC to adjourn at 5:28 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate will be announced.
An Agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting.
