The annual Academic Senate photo was taken at 4:00 pm.
A meeting of the Academic Senate was called to order by Chair Caldwell at 4:13 p.m. in the Library Auditorium, Room 2206.
1. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda.
2. Approval. MSC to approve the Minutes of 9/20/10.
3. Communications and Announcements.
A. Installation of New Senators.
They were installed and welcomed.

B. Provost Covino announced the university’s 2010-2011 FTE target has increased by 406 for a total increase of 798 FTE. Due to the additional increase in FTE, admission of qualified upper division transfers and graduate students for spring 2011 will begin. Approximately 1,000 qualified upper division and graduate applicants are expected to be admitted for spring 2011, but approximately 700 are expected to enroll.
4. New Business.-There was no new business.
5. Policy On Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM 322) – Personnel Committee – Second Reading – Continued.
Following a motion to approve the policy, Senator Jacinta Amaral (Statewide) requested that a ‘track-changes’ copy of the policy including the previously passed amendments be made available before voting on the policy. Chair Caldwell commented that the Vice-Chair had provided copies of the amendments throughout the proceedings and it was not common practice for the Senate to provide a strikeout copy before voting.
Senator Amaral called for a secret ballot, which took place following the creation of ballots. Following the vote, Senator Amaral once again stated that a final copy had not been presented and Chair Caldwell restated that it was not common practice for the Senate to do so and the Vice Chair proceeded with a verbal account of the secret ballot.
MSC to approve the Policy on Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness (APM322) as amended by the Academic Senate and forward to the President for approval.
The motion carried with a vote of: YES-28, NO-17.
6. Policy on Repeating Classes (APM233) –Student Affairs Committee.
Christine Edmonson, Chair, Student Affairs Committee provided a presentation describing changes to APM 233 required by Executive Order 1037-the committee’s consultation process and points of deliberation for implementing EO 1037: and additional revisions from the deliberative process. Dr. Edmonson answered several questions from Senators regarding the policy.
APM 233 will return to the Academic Senate agenda for a second reading.
7. Updated Policies and Procedures for Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation - Janette Redd Williams, Associate Vice President, Academic Personnel.
Janette Redd Williams, Associate Vice President, Academic Personnel was not present to discuss the agenda item.
MSC to recommend the Updated Policies and Procedures for Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation as an interim policy until full review by the Academic Senate.
MSC to adjourn at 5:16 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting of the Academic Senate will be announced.
An Agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting.
