The meeting was called to order by Chair C. Edmondson at 10:00 a.m. in Thomas Administration, room #117.
1. Minutes. MSC to approve the Minutes of 11/10/2011 with the following amendments to Members absent: N. Nisbett (excused)
2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.
3. Communication and Announcements Report on Student Success Task Force Activities
4. Resolution for Academic Senate Regarding Class Sizes and Student/Faculty Ratios.
a. Discussion resulted in unanimous support
b. MSC to approve forwarding the memo to the Academic Senate
5. Resolution for Academic Senate Regarding the Graduation Initiative
a. Discussion – we do not want graduation numbers to increase without providing quality
experiences for students and without students having
breadth and depth of knowledge coupled with strong skills. Especially in light of
increasing fees and the tight job market.
b. Discussion – Remediation plan has been submitted to the Chancellor.
c. Discussion – anecdotally faculty and departments have concerns about the initiative and are hesitant to support it.
d. Discussion – about the feasibility of the resolution that will require financial resources.
e. Discussion – the initiative can’t be changed, but we can create a dialogue about how to make it work for everyone.
f. MSC to approve forwarding the memo to the Academic Senate
6. APM 243 – Policies and Procedures Student Academic Petitions Committee
a. The charge to determine if EO 1037 necessitates revisions to the policies and procedure.
b. Danny Pavolovich provided the committee with a report on his consultation with
Tina Beddall regarding whether the EO1037
requirements for Academic Renewal affect campus policies and procedures for retroactive
withdrawals.
i. Retroactive withdrawal is not addressed by 1037. It is usually only used for one
class. Once a retroactive withdrawal is
granted, the withdrawal will count toward the 18 unit limit if it is granted for any
course taken during or after Fall 2010.
ii. Grade substitution is also only used for one class. In grade substitution, the
grade remains on the transcript, but it is not
counted toward the GPA. This is different from retroactive withdrawal in that the
grade is removed and replaced with a W.
iii. Academic Renewal applies to an entire semester of coursework. Administratively, it is like a course withdrawal, except the grade remains on the transcript, it is not counted in the GPA, and if it is passing, it cannot be used to fulfill the requirements toward graduation. The course units do not count toward the total allowed for withdrawal or grade substitution.
7. Old Business
a. Proposed Policies and Procedures for Changing Undergraduate Majors and Minors.
b. Review and comment on improving compliance with the Upper Division Writing Requirement.
c. Review and comment on the proposed Co-Curricular Leadership Certificate.
d. Review and comment on a report from Dennis Nef on a pilot phase of portfolio assessment
conducted in association with the Q-DOGS’ Task
Force.
