The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. by Chair Putirka in Library Room
#4164.

1. Minutes.

2. Agenda. MSC to approve the Agenda as distributed.

3. Communications and Announcements

Dennis indicates that students taking W courses may be able to submit their papers to E-Portfolios; this would give the WCC a chance to compare the
writing products of W courses with very different passing rates.

4. Discussion Items

MSC to approve Minutes from Nov. 18, 2010 meeting. We recommend that the University will appoint someone to act as a Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Coordinator, whose duties will include:

1. Working with faculty who teach W and GE courses, to instruct them on best practices when teaching writing; this should include classroom
visitations, and the development of seminars and web-based resources, and sufficient familiarity with new technologies (e.g., Crierion) so as to
instruct faculty and students in their use.
2. Refashion and integrate, as necessary, various writing centers and writing tutorials that currently exist on campus.
3. Conduct writing-oriented course and program assessments.

4. Conduct original, publishable, research in the field of writing to determine best practices. We would encourage the WCC to use Fresno State students (and faculty) to quantitatively determine which policies and practices are most effective.
5. Collect and disseminate information regarding writing (and reading) practices and policies at other universities, and conduct quantitative
assessments of which, if any, are effective.

The next scheduled meeting of the Writing Competency Subcommittee will be February 24, 2011, 11:00 a.m., Library, Room 4164.
