Osher Foundation grant results in Lifelong Learning Institute
(From the University Journal | May 2005 • Vol 8, No 9) The Division of Continuing and Global Education has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the Bernard Osher Foundation for the creation of an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The institute is a program offering lifelong learning opportunities to people 50 and older who are retired or semi-retired. The grant has the potential for an additional two-year renewal and subsequently, the program may qualify for a permanent endowment.
Fresno State’s program joins 48 other Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes in colleges and universities throughout the country.
"The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will augment and enhance the many collaborative senior programs already offered by the university," said Dr. Berta González, associate vice president of Continuing and Global Education.
Osher programs will include short courses, discussion and book groups, lecture series, special events and travel study programs, beginning in fall 2005. Activities will take place both on the Fresno State campus as well as off-site in other communities.
Dr. Shirley Bruegman has been named director of Fresno State’s institute. She retired as vice chancellor of the State Center Community College District in 2002 and currently teaches in the Community College Faculty Preparation Certificate program at Fresno State.
