Grant Application Productivity Rises
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) reports that grant applications increased very significantly for 2 009-2010 in spite of faculty and ORSP furloughs as well as retirements by senior ORSP managers. The Director of Sponsored Programs position was vacant for over a year until being filled in July by Dr. Gil Harootunian, and another key manager’s position has yet to be filled on a full time basis.
53 more proposals were submitted last year than in the previous fiscal year and 70 more were submitted than in the year prior to that. According to Dr. Thomas McClanahan, Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs, “that figure is a 16% increase from the previous year and a 25% from two years ago. Those numbers are indicators of our institutional growth in seeking external support that advances intellectual discovery and benefits students in the process.”
