Geography professor Segun Ogunjemiyo selected for USDA Fellowship Program
Dr. Segun Ogunjemiyo, an assistant professor of geography, has been selected to participate in the 2007 U.S. Department of Agriculture - E. (Kika) de la Garza Fellows Program.
Ogunjemiyo is engaged in cutting-edge scientific research for the solution of Valley environmental and agricultural problems, and he was instrumental in establishing the Central Valley Environmental Research Laboratory in the Geography Department.
The USDA E. (Kika) de la Garza Fellows Program was established in 1998 as part of the USDA-Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Leadership Group’s efforts to advance USDA’s relationship with participating institutions. The program is designed to enhance fellows’ professional growth while fostering workforce diversity and strengthening the nation’s capacity to provide high quality education and increased opportunities for Hispanic-Americans.
As a Science Fellow, Ogunjemiyo will collaborate with leading scientists from USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) - one of the world’s premier scientific organizations. Ogunjemiyo will learn about state-of-the-art agricultural research that solves problems affecting Hispanic Americans and the rest of our nation on a daily basis.
Upon his return, Ogunjemiyo will share his expertise with students at Fresno State - motivating Hispanic students to pursue careers in agriculture, science, research, and technology. Ogunjemiyo will attend a one-week mandatory orientation in Washington , D.C. , in addition to collaborating with an ARS Research Center within the country.
Ogunjemiyo was also one of nine Fresno State professors to receive the Promising New Faculty award, which recognizes exemplary achievements in teaching, research/creative activities and/or service among nontenured, tenure-track faculty at Fresno State.
