Judges Face Difficult Decisions at 27th Annual Central California Research Symposium

FRESNO (APRIL 24, 2006) – The quality of presentations reached a new high at the 27th Annual Central California Research Symposium, held April 21 at the University Business Center on the campus of California State University, Fresno. In one category, judges decided on two first-place awards after being unable to select just one winner.

Hosted by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at California State University, Fresno, the Symposium serves to bring together investigators, students, and faculty from a variety of disciplines to share the results of their scholarly work. Co-sponsors of the event include the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Fresno Medical Education Program, and Alliant International University.

A total of 48 oral and 43 poster presentations were made at the event, which attracted students from San Jose, Pomona, Santa Cruz, and throughout the Central Valley.

Three students from California State University, Fresno captured first-place honors for their oral presentations. Marcel Garcia received undergraduate honors for his project, “Effects of Lexical Competition on Audiovisual Integration in Speech Perception,” while Ammon Rice and Enrique Lopez shared first-place honors for best graduate oral presentation.

In the poster competition, the two first-place winners were Dora Rendulic ("Investigation of a Simple Chemical Assay as an Indicator of the Toxicity of Ambient Particulate Manner”) and Saben Kane ("Studying Embryogenesis of the Endoparasitic Root Knot Nematode Meloidogyne Icognita”).
