Sustainability at Fresno State

California Climate Action Corps

7,053 Pounds of edible food recovered for the Student Cupboard
24,591 Square feet of nonfunctional grass restored with native landscaping
28,906 Pounds of organic waste recovered for on-site composting

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) Fellowship is a state-wide workforce development program created to develop the next generation of leaders to fight the effects of climate change. The program employs people to serve their communities for 4 or 11-month terms in the areas of urban greening, organic waste diversion, wildfire resiliency, and climate education. This program allows Fresno State to have a direct impact on our students and surrounding community by providing tangible solutions to fight climate change as well as restore our local community's relationship with the environment. Since Fall 2023, CCAC Fellows at Fresno State primarily serve on projects related to recovering edible food for students; creating and maintaining native garden plots; diverting organic waste from landfills for on-site composting; and climate change outreach and education. In addition to the statistics shown above, CCAC Fellows at Fresno State have also collectively planted 103 trees; 1,472 California native plants; and engaged over 3,359 people throughout Fresno County.

Fellowship Details

CCAC Fellows receive a $33,000 salary, split into 11-monthly stipends, and an additional $10,000 education award upon completion of their term of service. Fellows also receive a standard benefits package including medical insurance, CalFresh eligibility, and childcare assistance. The real benefits of the Fellowship are the job-relevant training, professional development, and networking opportunities available to Fellows during their term. No prior experience necessary - just passion for serving your community to build a better future!

Food Gleaning Project

Do you have fruit trees that produce too much fruit for your household to eat? Are you a business with extra food that you would like to donate? With food waste serving as the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, our Fresno State CCAC Fellows are looking to glean foods from our community and deliver that food to our Amendola Family Student Cupboard - our food bank designed specifically for students - in order for us to better fulfill our students' basic needs and reduce the environmental impact of food waste on our community.

Volunteer with CCAC

Recruiting volunteers to engage in climate action projects is vital to the success of CCAC. Our Fellows host numerous opportunities throughout the year for people to learn more about climate action and serve our campus community. Volunteers can help us remove grass, put native plants into the ground, educate people on zero waste practices, or help out with upcoming events. All are welcome to get involved!
