The Smittcamp Family Honors College

"My eyes met over 100 unfamiliar faces

when I walked into my first chemistry lecture. College is a different beast than high school, and I would wager that most first-years freeze in this situation (I sure did). However, I am lucky enough to be in the Smittcamp Family Honors College. I noticed a familiar half dozen people sitting near the front of the hall, and I walked over and was graciously welcomed. These were my cohort members, and this situation is one that has been mirrored all over campus. I have been invited to events, given advice on my major, bonded over shared joys and struggles, and genuinely had such a great experience as I transitioned to college life."

I chose Smittcamp because I knew that it was an opportunity that I couldn't refuse to challenge and to engage myself in my education. Having pushed myself academically in high school, I realized that this scholarship would cultivate my academic and leadership skills. The Honors College offers its students many opportunities including specialized honors classes, one-on-one advising, scholarly activities, community service events and many more. Students are challenged to do their best in the classroom and community. In Smittcamp, I have found a great family of students who are motivated to learn, and to help their peers learn - all while having fun.

Not only is majority of the college tuition covered, but a house stipend is included. I look forward to dorming next year because it will be very convenient and gives me a chance to become more involved in social activities. The welcoming and friendly community of Smittcamp is very much worth it.

It’s an amazing opportunity to get an incredible education, get connections to faculty that can springboard into [. . .] post-degrees, and save a little money, in case you need to spend that when you’re in your graduate work.

One of the main reasons I chose Smittcamp was the financial aid I received from the Honors College. My family and I are very grateful for the opportunity I have to graduate from undergrad with no student loan debt. It has been an answer to my family’s prayers, and it has given me the freedom to pursue my passions without having to worry about making the next payment for my education. I am also grateful for the mentorship I have received from Dr. Attar and other students in Smittcamp. The Honors College truly emphasizes the 'family' aspect. I entered college with 200 other driven scholars ready to lend a helping hand for classes, textbooks, clubs, interactions with professors, study habits, and other important aspects of college life. The camaraderie and supportive environment has allowed me to make many friendships and connections.

Since it is a smaller university, I have been able to connect with professors on a deeper level, begin research earlier than other students at larger universities, and also get more personalized education/office hours. All of my recommendation letters from professors here are personal since we have a great connection.

In accepting this scholarship, I gained much more than an affordable education; I gained a community. During Colloquium every week, I had the opportunity to learn from CEOs, doctors, engineers, biologists, professors, and other experts in their fields who also graduated from Smittcamp.

When applying to colleges, I knew that no matter what pathway I chose, I wanted to ensure a culture of learning and humility was at its core. The Smittcamp Family Honors College embodies this culture, and inspires outside communities to do the same. The program challenges me to be the best “me” possible, and I can say this holds true for other scholars as well.
