Fresno State receives three awards at 21st annual CSU Student Research Competition
CARSON (MAY 5, 2007) – Three California State University, Fresno students received awards Saturday at the 21st annual California State University Student Research Competition, held at CSU Dominguez Hills.
Dr. Thomas McClanahan, Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs at Fresno State, explained that the system-wide conference exhibits excellent research by CSU undergraduate and graduate students from all 23 CSU campuses. Each of the eight academic schools submitted the names of their top candidates to represent the university at this two-day event. A jury of professionals judged the conference presentations in the various academic disciplines, and awards were presented to the winning student researchers.
A total of 172 students presented their research in 10 different categories, and two California State University, Fresno students were named as the outstanding presenter in their category.
Rebecca Headrick of Hanford received first place in the Behavioral and Social Sciences graduate category for her presentation, "No Person Shall Be Forced to Have an Abortion Against His Will: The Case of Epicene Pronouns in Written Discourse." Headrick is receiving her master’s degree in linguistics this month, and her faculty mentor is Dr. Shigeko Okamoto.
Carlos Tristan received first place in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences graduate division for his presentation, "Gene Expression Profile of Trangenic Nicotiana Tabacum Plants Expressing Caenorhabditis’ Cell Death Genes." Tristan also won first place at the Central California Research Symposium at California State University, Fresno on April 12, and his faculty mentor is Dr. Alejandro Calderon-Urrea. A native of Oxnard, Tristan will enter the Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins University this fall.
In the Behavioral and Social Sciences graduate category, David Pyrooz of Gustine received the runner-up award for his presentation, "Risk factors of gang membership: Results from an analysis of self-reported gang members in the Fresno County jail." Pyrooz is receiving his master’s degree in criminology this month, and his faculty mentors are Dr. Jason Kissner, Dr. Jerome Jackson and Dr. Barbara Owen.
Seven other participants from California State University, Fresno presented at the CSU Student Research Competition: Sergio Aguilar-Rudametkin, Hazel Hofman, Saben Kane, Takako Kurimoto, Gilberto Lopez, Natalie Powers, and Tonantzin Soto.
