ATI Instructional Materials Accessibility Reports

  1. What are the accessibility scores based on?
    1. The scores in the ATI IM report are pulled from the Ally Institution Report for the current term. This number represents the average accessibility scores of all content items uploaded into Canvas that live in courses associated with that term.
  2. Does this score factor in courses from previous semesters?
    1. No, this report is only based on data for content in the current course term referenced in the report.
  3. Are files that are not in use factored into the accessibility score?
    1. Yes, this score captures the score of all files uploaded into Canvas for the current term, even if they are not in use in the course. This is why we encourage the use of TidyUp. By clearing out unused files, you can ensure the accessibility of materials that will actually be used by students in your course.
    2. Learn how to use TidyUp: Using TidyUp in Canvas
  4. How would I know if the score is better or worse than previous scores my college has received?
    1. The ATI IM committee has created and sent a version of the institution report each semester since Fall 2023. Your ATI IM representative can provide you with previous term reports for comparison.
  5. Are courses with more documents weighted more heavily as compared to other courses, or is this an average across all courses with equal weighting?
    1. This score is an average of all content items uploaded into Canvas within the entire department for the current term. This version of the report does not factor in course content at an individual course level.
  6. Which Canvas shells are you looking at when developing this report? If I have a Canvas shell that is not specifically for a class, is this included?
    1. This report is only based on the score of files uploaded in courses for the active term.
    2. While the scope of this report is focused on Instructional Materials in the current term, it is important to note that the Title II Final Rule accessibility requirements for institutions cover non-archival public web content, which includes Learning Management System content as well as websites, etc. So, if you have an organization course shell (such as a Canvas shell for training, advising, or departmental forms), they are also required to be accessible under Title II.
      1. If you would like to look into your department’s Organizational Courses for accessibility, contact the IDEAS accessibility team, accessibility@mail.fresnostate.edu.
    3. Developmental Canvas shells that are for the personal use of the instructor, and not shared with anyone for use, do not have this requirement. However, it is a good idea to address accessibility of the content in a developmental shell, as it will then be accessible when it is copied into an active course
  7. Who can provide support and training to faculty on Canvas Accessibility
    1. Contact accessibility@mail.fresnostate.edu for accessibility questions, or to request training on instructional material accessibility topics
    2. For individual support, you can also schedule a UDL/Accessibility Support Consultation with the Office of IDEAS
